I have a friend who wants to be a heavy-equipment operator. Any advice on how to do this?

He lives in Canada and has no experience in Heavy Equipment operating. I know he need to get a CDL if he is to work in NY, but not sure about the Canada laws. he doesn't have thousands to spend on going to a school first, besides I've heard that most operators find them a joke and they advise to learn on the job. Does anyone know of any resources where he can find companies that will train him on the job? I really don't know anything about the field at all, but really want to help him out. He wants to make a career out of it, not just a part time job, what would be the best way for him to start?

Your friend does not need a CDL unless it his intention to move the equipment from one location to another. Most companies have people, other than their operators to move equipment.

He needs training. If he does not have the funds to go to for training, he may want to consider getting an entry job for a company that will train him. I would look at smaller companies. Most of these companies would start him on a front end loader to get his hand-eye coordination where it needs to be.

If her were living in the States and a citizen he could be eligible for training grant, but have no knowledge about Canada.

I am thinking about training in heavy equipment operating. Is it worth my time to learn this trade?

My advice would be to get to know any of the people that he will be working with, but get together with them for a fun time. Then he can ask questions from someone informed about the job. He could also try joining a union, or simply asking some of the members of that union. Internet is a good place to find advice too. (But I'm sure you know that ;)

I've taken a heavy equipment course here in NS. My company paid for me to take it but most of the other students had grants through Employment Insurance. If he is collecting Employment Insurance then he can approach them about a grant.

The course I took was through Operating Engineers, the local Union for heavy equipment operators. A good place to start by contacting the Union Hall. It will be in the phone book under International Brotherhood of Operating Engineers. They'll advise for sure…

Otherwise if he is seriously looking at it for a Career School is what he'll need. Alot of the community colleges in Canada have Heavy Equipment courses at fairly reasonable prices.

If he is in Western Canada they are in dire need of operators, he might want to call some of the big companies out there like Syncrude.. they just had a job fair in Nova Scotia offering a $90k salary.. $10k signing bonus ,money for moving and a place to live for two months…

I'm looking into that myself, I'm waiting to hear back.

First, begin drinking very heavily and applying at local heavy-equipment-like places.
Second, if you don't have an education, then you might just do something else that will, in fact, pay for you to get an education so you can actually be a heavy-equipment operator.
