How to Catch Big Catfish
It can be exhausting and sometimes even expensive to learn how to catch big catfish. Because mega-cats or whiskered warriors, as they are sometimes referred to, can bust rods, straighten hooks, snap heavy line, and ruin equipment overall, it can get frustrating trying to hook and keep a trophy-sized catfish.
Of course, depending on what type of catfish you are searching for, the term “big” is definitely relative, but learning how to catch big catfish simply begins with being patient and taking tips from others who have success stories.
Because trophy-sized cats don’t appear on a daily basis, it takes a lot of patience to find what you are looking for. While you can find heavyweights of various types in many waters, it doesn’t guarantee that there is an over abundance of them.
Keep in mind that many of the largest catfish are extremely old and may even outdate those who are trying to catch them, meaning that they’ve had lots of time to practice avoiding the hook. Large fish tend to become even shier and more elusive as the years pass, making them all the more difficult to find.
However, combine patience – especially since you can spend several hours without catching anything in your attempt to find big catfish – with persistence and you may get lucky. In your search for a trophy, you should be prepared to get comfortable on the lake or river where you’ve decided to make your attempt.
Take with you a comfortable seat, food and drink (carry a cooler to keep everything fresh), and some good insect repellent. Also, you may not want to go it alone, since you may be spending some long days and nights on the water and will begin to crave companionship. Perseverance is a must because without keeping bait in the water, you will never be able to catch that trophy-worthy catfish.
Because catfishing used to be considered a strictly nighttime sport, how to catch a big catfish was always thought to be a no-brainer. However, it’s become clear that catching a large specimen can occur at anytime, day or night.
The real question is where and how to go about it. For example, you can find catfish in clear waters, and in these areas, you are probably most likely to catch a winner at night (catfish prefer a darker environment). However, if you frequent the more muddied and colored waters in the rivers and lakes that provide the best catfish, you have just as much chance of finding your prize winner at high noon as you do in the wee hours of the morning.

How to catch catfish in my half acre pond?
My paw-paw stocked it with catfish 7 years ago. I have a theory that they are all DEAD! We tried catching them with cut up bluegill, catfish biscuits, and worms and never got a bite! Please give me tips on trying to catch these little bastards.
Yes, they have bluegill, largemouth bass, crappie, and google-eye.
Yes they have minnows too, and idk what kind of catfish i know for sure not flatheads.
Chicken livers or cut bait. The key is to throw it out and make sure it is hitting the bottom. Then patience you have to let it sit, you can’t expect a bite too quickly and keep reeling it in.

Try using a few trotlines in different places in the pond with several types of catfish bait….if you don’t pull up ANYTHING the next morning..you might be right. But catfish are pretty good survivors. What kind of catfish did he stock it with? and is there any other fish in that pond….even minnows?

Chicken Liver will probably work. I say the catfish you have are Bullheads or Channel Cat’s. Shrimp and corn work good for them also. But, definently try Chicken liver. They’re have to be at least a few catfish still in the pond. Try Minnows too.
None of those other fish could eat catfish because, the catfish were bigger than most of them! Just try chicken liver or minnows or maybe shrimp!
Hope i helped!

hey there. all the answers are good ones but they are missing out on a good important bit of information that will help you out. of course chicken livers are great to catch these catfish and you might want to use a stink bait as well. the stinks that i like are a mixture of chicken blood and shrimp. can be picked up at your local walley world. but when you go to use a bait for catfish especially liver or stink bait dough balls use a trebble hook. if using liver use it when the livers are cold keep them on ice. they will stay harder that way and only use half. most livers are big and you will have excess hanging off that will allow the fish to pull the bait off your line. when using a trebble hook hook the liver with one hook and twist the liver around the trebble. it will hold on better. when you are using a stink bait do pretty much the samething but all you have to do is push it onto the shaft to the hook and press it down onto the trebble part and just pack it on tightly. using a single regular hook can work but most of the time when you bait gets gone it is because it falls off and not because a fish took it. when fishing for the ol kitty kitty fish you want to fish bottom. use a few good sixed split shot weights to get it to the bottom. but put the weights about a foot to a foot and a half above the bait. you want the bait to be at the bottom but not burried in the mud. use a bobber if you like and adjust it accordinly to the depth of the pond. with the trebble hook there will be minimal amount of hook set. when i fish this way i usually just cast out and walk away. check on it later. fishing for catfish takes patience so i dont stand there staring at the bobber. makes alot of people aggrivated doing that. when the cat swims by it will inhail the bait. trust me that trebble hook will get tied up in his mouth with out you being there. i hope this helps you out a bit good luck good fishin be safe and remember to share the experinece

Alright you might think this is crazy but try it. Take a few 2 liter coke bottles and then tie line around the lip, put a hook on it and bait it. put theses near the center of the pond and wait. when one stands up on its end it is getting a bite. retrieve the bottles a few hours later or the next morning. if ya caught anything then their there. clearly. if not then odds are there are few or no cats in the pond.
or a stick of dynamite will do it.

Too many answers already but here is the most simple way to "catchacat". Wait till dusk tie on a sinker and big hook, glob on the chicken livers, cast out as far as you can, close the action on the reel, sit on a chair holding a tight line. When you get the first nibble, open the reel action and let the fish take it for a minute or so and then set the hook as hard as you can, reel the fish in and repeat the steps until your arm gets sore or you can always go noodling.hahahaha
