Know what you’re getting into when you get a home alarm system. Not all companies have your good in mind. Know the terms of your contract. Not all alarm companies in Florida are the same. Some companies aren’t clear about what you’re signing up for. Be sure to check 1. Your initial term. The standard is 3 years but one company commits you to 3 years with their financing company and 2 more with them. 2. Auto renewals, check to see if your contract auto renews for a month, a year, 2 years or even 5 years. 3. How do you cancel, most require a written notice 60 before the end of your contract. 4. What are you buying? After you pay for the system, can another company monitor the equipment without modification. Is it proprietary, is there a chip that only calls their central station, or is there a “lock out code?” One company charges you $500 if you cancel with them. If you don’t pay it they lock up your system so you can’t use it. That’s just wrong! Buyer beware!
